Welcome to Hartford, Connecticut.
New England's Rising Star is one of America's original cities. Founded by Dutch traders in the early 1600's and established by the Reverend Thomas Hooker in 1636--- what started as a fort called the "House of Hope" is now a land of growth and opportunity for an enormously diverse population. The capital of Connecticut, in the north-central part of the state on the Connecticut River. Settled 1635-1636 by Massachusetts colonists on the site of a Dutch trading post, it became the nucleus of the Connecticut Colony in 1639. From 1701 to 1875 it was joint capital with New Haven. Population: 124,000.
Hartford is the home of such internationally known treasures as the Wadsworth Atheneum (the nation's first public museum), as well as attractions like the Mark Twain House, the Hartford Stage, the Bushnell Memorial, and the Artists Collective. But ever since traders used the Connecticut River to conduct business, Hartford has been abuzz with insurance and financial transactions. Companies such as Aetna, The Hartford Insurance Group, Phoenix, and St. Paul-Travelers have their roots here--- as does industrial giants like United Technologies. But our biggest pride is our people--- a melting pot of the world that's reflected in our restaurants, business districts, and entertainment.
Hartford is a bussiness center known as the insurance capital of the world. Taken by Michael Czaczkes
A trip to Hartford can include visits to historic treasures such as the Mark Twain House, scenic views from a riverboat cruise, a fragrant stroll through the nation's oldest municipal rose garden and an evening of music or theater at one of the fine local performance venues. Best of all, Hartford is both easy to get to and central, so it provides a perfect home base from which to plan day trips and explore many other parts of the state and the region.
